With a grant-in-aid from the Czech Republic, a Czech company specializing in waste treatment and disposal, Dekonta, has completed the burial of 20,322 m2 of toxic silt in a landfill at the Moringiin Davaa disposal site. This silt had been stored for 20 years at the Khargia Sewage Treatment Plant in Khan-Uul District. The work to transport and bury the silt began in October 2011. The removal of the silt has improved the living conditions of the residents of Khan-Uul District by preventing further health risks and soil pollution that had been caused by the silt. More ...
Petrželka Karel, the Manager and General Director of Dekonta, said in a statement, "Studies had found that the content of chrome sulfide within the silt had reached a level harmful to people's health. Therefore it had to be buried immediately. It was originally estimated that there was 13,000 m2 of silt stored at the Khargia Plant, but we found that the silt had overflowed and there was an amount measuring between 1 and 1.5 metres thick. We transported the accumulated silt to Moringiin Davaa in accordance with a decision by the Ulaanbaatar Administration Office and buried the silt in an eco-friendly way through laying bentonite (waterproof and unbreakable plastic) underneath the silt. The work cost 20,356,000 Czech Koruna (over one million US dollars). It is recommended that the Ulaanbaatar City Maintenance Service Authority take control of the cleaned area at the Khargia Sewage Treatment Plant and plant trees to rehabilitate the land".
The Czech Ambassador to Mongolia, the General Manager of Ulaanbaatar City, B. Bardal, and Dekonta representatives attended an event to mark the end of the clean-up.
